RadioShack files for bankruptcy; Sprint to take over some stores

(Reuters) - Electronics retailer RadioShack Corp (RSHC.PK) filed for U.S. bankruptcy protection on Thursday and said it had a deal in place to sell as many as 2,400 stores to an affiliate of hedge fund Standard General, its lender and largest shareholder.
Wireless company Sprint Corp (S.N) would operate as many as 1,750 of those stores under an agreement with Standard General, Sprint said separately.
RadioShack's bankruptcy, which has been expected for months, follows 11 consecutive unprofitable quarters as the company has failed to transform itself into a destination for mobile phone buyers. But its sale agreement with Standard General could spare it the fate most retailers suffer in Chapter 11, liquidation.
RadioShack said in a statement that the Standard General affiliate, called General Wireless, would acquire between 1,500 and 2,400 of its 4,100 stores.
Sprint would occupy about one-third of each RadioShack store, selling "mobile devices across Sprint`s brand portfolio as well as RadioShack products, services and accessories," Sprint said in its statement.
Other potential buyers will also have the opportunity to bid on RadioShack assets. Any deal will need approval by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, so nothing is etched in stone.
Sprint's chief executive, Marcelo Claure, in a statement said the deal will "allow Sprint to grow branded distribution quickly and cost effectively."
In an interview with Reuters earlier on Thursday, Claure said RadioShack had "incredible store locations," and he was keen to acquire some to cut down on long waits at Sprint's current stores. "Customers have to wait one or two hours to get a phone and that’s not acceptable," Claure said. [L1N0VF26W]
A spokesman for Standard General did not respond to a request for comment.
RadioShack, with 21,000 employees, $1.2 billion of assets and $1.39 billion of debts according to court papers, said it also has an agreement with a lender group led by DW Partners for a $285 million loan to operate in bankruptcy.
OTHER RESTRUCTURING MOVES
The Standard General deal is only a piece of its restructuring efforts. RadioShack has a deal with liquidation firm Hilco to shutter as many as 2,100 underperforming stores and said it has already begun discussions with other potential buyers to acquire the rest of its assets.
"These steps are the culmination of a thorough process intended to drive maximum value for our stakeholders," RadioShack Chief Executive Joe Magnacca said in the statement.

The chain's more than 1,000 dealer franchise stores, its Mexican subsidiary and its Asian operations are not part of the bankruptcy, it said.

Lottery officials in N.M. claim ticket worth $500K was a misprint

According to Joyce Lupiani, a man in New Mexico thought he won half a million dollars on a scratch-off lottery ticket. But the state lottery says that the ticket was a misprint and they are refusing to pay.

John Wines bought the ticket on Dec. 6 at a gas station in Roswell, according to KOB-TV Channel 4. The winning numbers were 1 and 2 and Wines says that his ticket has five of the winning numbers, totally more than $500,000.

The New Mexico State Lottery says that is incorrect. The maximum prize for the tickets was only $250,000. And, if you take a close look, it appears that there is a number next to the ones on the ticket.

Lottery officials told Wines that the ticket was flawed and not worth anything.

Despite the fine print on the back of the ticket that says the lottery is not liable for "void, altered, or misprinted tickets," Wines disagrees and now he is suing the state lottery.

Wines says it is not his fault if the ticket was flawed and he bought it in good faith. In addition, he says, lottery ticket buyers are unable to read the fine print until after purchase.

Wines told KRQE News 13 that the "New Mexico lottery is cheating."

Arizona Teacher raped while giving exam to Prisoners. AZ district general says: She knows the risk. Really? System failed again.

According to Daily Kos, a woman who works as a teacher for the Arizona Department of Corrections suffered a brutal rape at the hands of a prisoner Jacob Harvey. Due to a special event, she was in a room without guards or cameras and had just finished administering a GED test when the unthinkable happened:
According to the lawsuit, the 20-year-old inmate grabbed her from behind and took her to the ground as she struggled. He then stabbed her repeatedly in the head with a pen, choked her, slammed her head into the floor, tore away her clothes and raped her, the lawsuit says.
The teacher told investigators she screamed for help, but no one came. After the attack, Harvey tried to use her radio to call for help but it was tuned to a channel the guards didn't even use. Eventually, Harvey allowed her to phone for help.
This week the Arizona Attorney General's office is asking for her subsequent lawsuit to be tossed, on the grounds that she should've known better:
"Plaintiff is an ADOC (Arizona Department of Corrections) employee who routinely worked at the prison complex," Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Weisbard wrote in his motion to dismiss. "By being placed in a classroom at the complex, the officers were not placing Plaintiff in any type of situation that she would not normally face. The risk of harm, including assault, always existed at a prison like Eyman."
Not placing her at risk? The rapist, Jacob Harvey, was there for another brutal rape:
And why she would be left alone with an inmate who less than a year before had been sentenced to nearly 30 years after a daytime home invasion in which he beat and raped a Glendale woman in front of her toddler.
The system failed her in all ways:
The lawsuit blames corrections employees for failing to establish proper security and its health care provider for not providing a mental health evaluation to the prisoner. That allowed the 20-year-old convicted rapist to be classified as a relatively low-risk offender and gain access to the classroom in January 2014.
The Arizona Attorney General's office should be ashamed of their attitude and efforts to dismiss the lawsuit. The unidentified woman is seeking $4 million in damages. Hopefully a jury will do the right thing since the state of Arizona won't.

TransAsia Accident in Taiwan

Please Pray for the family who are left behind by their loved ones after the TransAsia crashed in the River.

(CNN) -- The pilots of TransAsia Airways Flight GE235 grappled with problems with both the plane's engines before it clipped a bridge and crashed
into a river, Taiwan's Aviation Safety Council said Friday.
The stall warning went off in the cockpit five times, starting from about 37 seconds after takeoff, the aviation agency told reporters, citing information from the aircraft's flight recorders.
The two engines on the ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop aircraft stopped producing power one after the other, and the pilots failed in an attempt to
restart one of them, according to the agency.

The pilots issued a mayday alert to air traffic control, announcing an engine flameout, or power failure.

Flight GE235 crashed into the Keelung River in Taiwan's capital, Taipei, shortly after taking off Wednesday with 58 people on board.

Authorities say that so far, 35 people have been confirmed dead, 15 survived and 8 are still missing, according to Taiwan's official news agency CNA. Two people on the ground were also hurt.

The Aviation Safety Council said Friday it was still collecting information on the disaster and wasn't yet able to say what caused the engines to
shut down.

The agency says it will take months to carry out a full analysis of the contents of Flight GE235's flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder.

The reported engine problems tally with the account of Huang Chin-shun, a 72-year-old survivor of the crash.

"I thought something's wrong with the engine because I always take this flight," Huang told CNN affiliate ETTV from his hospital bed on Thursday.

Stephen Fredrick, a pilot who once flew ATRs for American Airlines, told CNN this week that it looked like Flight GE235 was gliding when dashboard cameras on the ground captured the moments before it crashed into the river.

Fredrick pointed to the position of the nose, slightly down, and the wings, level. He said he thought the plane may have lost power in one or
both of the engines.

TransAsia was involved in another deadly disaster in July. Forty-eight people died after an ATR 72 aircraft operated by the airline crashed as
it was attempting to land in the Taiwanese Penghu Islands during bad weather

The Disneyland measles outbreak.

Five things to know about the Disneyland measles outbreak.
According to Forbes.com. the number of measles cases linked to the outbreak beginning at Disneyland has continued increasing, most recently to 52 as of Monday night, including a 22-month old girl in Mexico who visited the theme park during the exposure dates. And as expected, misinformation has proliferated online at the same rate as the disease (or perhaps a even more). So as you continue arguing in comment threads and on social media, make sure you have your talking points ready.

1) Two things are driving the spread of measles – and neither is undocumented immigrants.
Those two things are the extreme infectiousness of the disease and the low levels of herd immunity, or community immunity, in pockets of southern California. Measles infects 9 out of every 10 non-immune individuals it finds. It’s airborne and hangs around up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area. It doesn’t take much for this disease to spread through a population that isn’t immune from previous exposure or through vaccination. Or, to put it another way, in an unvaccinated population, each person infected with the measles will transmit the disease to 12 to 18 other people. If no one were vaccinated against measles, we would be up to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of cases by now. We aren’t because there are some levels of herd immunity, but it’s because herd immunity has been weakened that we’re seeing additional cases at all.
2) Everyone is at risk, but especially those unvaccinated. No vaccine can protect 100% of those who receive it. As I explainedlast year, vaccines can fail. The antibodies your body creates can wane, or your body may not have sufficiently responded to the vaccine in the first place. But those who are unvaccinated are at a greater risk by far. An unvaccinated person is 35 times more likely to catch measles than a vaccinated person.
4) The MMR vaccine against the measles is low risk and highly effective.
Protection against measles is delivered within the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine. The second dose of the vaccine brings its effectiveness up to 99%. It’s a live vaccine, which ramps up the fear factor for some people, but it’s a vaccine we’ve been using since 1971. We have nearly five decades of data with hundreds of millions of vaccinated individuals, and we know precisely what the possible side effects of the vaccine are. The most common ones are a fever in one of six people, a mild rash in one of 20 people, and swollen glands in the cheeks or neck in one of 75 people. In one of every 3,000 doses, a child can experience a seizure caused by high fever, but febrile seizures do not cause any long-lasting damage, and they can be caused by illness (including measles) as well. A condition of low platelets, called ITP, can also occur in one out of 30,000 doses but usually goes away on its own. Any other severe occurrences that have been reported after the vaccine are “so rare that it is hard to tell whether they are caused by the vaccine,” the CDC notes.
5) Measles is a dangerous disease – and it’s not curable (not even with vitamin A).

AirAsia Flight QZ8501. What really happened?

According to the conducted investigations, The AirAsia flight QZ8501 was flying on excessive speed then got stalled.

The AirAsia flight that crashed in the Java Sea, killing 162 people, climbed too fast before stalling, Indonesia's transport minister has said.
Ignasius Jonan told a parliamentary hearing in Jakarta that flight QZ8501 had ascended at a speed of 6,000ft (1,828m) per minute.
He said it was not normal for a passenger jet to climb so fast.
There were no survivors when the plane crashed on 28 December en route from Surabaya to Singapore. The Airbus A320-200 is thought to have encountered difficulties from an approaching storm.Only 53 bodies have been retrieved so far from the crash area, where debris was scattered across the sea.'Faster than a fighter'
Mr Jonan told the hearing that radar data from the moments before the plane was lost revealed its speed of ascent."It is not normal to climb like that. It's very rare for commercial planes, which normally climb just 1,000 to 2,000 feet per minute," he said.
"It can only be done by a fighter jet."

Oil spilled in Yellowstone River up to 50,000 gallons.

The massive oil spill happened crosses the Yellowstone river when the the 12-inch pipeline was ruptured Saturday.
The scenic Yellowstone River has suffered its second sizable oil spill in four years, prompting truckloads of drinking water to be shipped into the eastern Montana city of Glendive. The latest spill is not expected to affect Yellowstone National Park, about 350 miles upstream.
Some oil from the weekend spill got into a water supply intake along the river that serves about 6,000 people in Glendive, according to preliminary tests at the city's water treatment plant. The sample showed elevated levels of volatile organic compounds, predominantly benzene, that would explain the odor in tap water, officials at the plant said. The potential health risks are uncertain until further testing is complete, they said.

A woman died hours after giving birth to quadruplets in Arizona, USA.

It just so sad that this woman lost her life after giving birth to quadruplets and never got a chance to hold them. According to usatoday.com., Morales was more than 31 weeks into her pregnancy when she delivered three girls and one boy Thursday, according to Todman. She has been one of the few able to visit the premature newborns and said they are doing well.
"They're beautiful," Todman said. "They have tubes in their mouths and their noses. They've got little monitors and wires all over their body."
The babies — Erica, Tracey, Paisley and Carlos — will likely remain in the neonatal intensive care unit until doctors deem them healthy and strong enough to leave. Todman said the newborns will reach 40 weeks by about March 24. At birth, they ranged from about 21/2 pounds to more than 3 pounds, she said.
Morales and her husband had been trying to conceive for about three years before becoming pregnant in June after in vitro fertilization. Previously, Morales had tried everything from acupuncture to fertility treatments, Todman said.
"She worked very hard to have the baby," she said. "She did everything, everything she could have done to make sure they are healthy."
Morales, an enrollment counselor at the University of Phoenix, was excited about the pregnancy, Todman said.
"She was really happy to finally be a mom," she said.
Todman, who has been best friends with Morales since childhood, said Morales was more nervous about being a new mother than raising four children at once. Because of a previous miscarriage, Morales was apprehensive about getting too excited about the babies' arrival. She mainly focused on making sure she was doing things correctly throughout her pregnancy, Todman said.

5 year old baby boy shoots brother in head.

This is a shocking news. Parents should be aware of their surroundings. Don't let small children see your gun or perhaps anything that will cause any harm. What do you think?

According to CNN news., The mother called 911 to say her 5-year-old boy shot his baby brother with a paintball gun.
But it wasn't a paintball gun. It was a .22-caliber Magnum revolver. And the 9-month-old boy didn't survive.
Authorities are trying to figure out what led to Monday's shooting in Elmo, in the northwest corner of Missouri.
"At this point foul play is not suspected, and it appears at this time that the shooting was accidental," the Nodaway County Sheriff's Office said.
Sheriff Darren White told CNN affiliate KCTV that the baby was in a playpen when his brother found the gun lying around a bed.
When emergency crews arrived, they found the infant had been shot in the head. The child was flown to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was pronounced dead, the station reported.
Authorities say the gun belongs to a relative, but not the mother. Police are investigating the gun's ownership, KCTV reported.
The mother's other three children are with relatives, according to the station.
The sheriff said guns are rampant in the rural community.
"We are big supporters of firearms around here," White told CNN affiliate KETV. "We have a lot of people that own weapons. They hunt. They target shoot. ... Most people are very safe with them, and this is one of those cases where everything went together in the wrong way."
He added, "We got some guys that work here that have little kids of their own. ... This kind of hits home with them, too. They take it personally."
Though they say the shooting was accidental, authorities have not determined whether charges will be filed against any adult in the case.
At least one nearby resident told KCTV she believes the shooting could have been easily prevented.
According to Project ChildSafe, gun owners should lock unloaded weapons in a safe, vault or cabinet inaccessible to children. Gun locks should be used in addition to safe storage, and ammunition should be locked away separately from any firearm.
Parents should also teach their children that if they find a gun in a house, they should leave it where it is and tell an adult, even if the weapon resembles a toy, the advocacy group says.
